Tutoring
As you’ve probably guessed, my name is Andrew Miller, and one of my passions is tutoring with a particular focus on English and the Humanities. I studied English & Creative Writing at Brock University, and intend to continue on to work towards my Masters in Creative Writing and Literature studies. My ultimate goal is to become an English & Writing professor.
As a tutor, my goal is to assist students with concepts that they may be struggling with, or to provide actionable feedback on their work to help them engage more fully with the requirements of their assignments. I hope to create a supportive and positive learning environment where the students I work with can thrive. Whether it’s developing writing skills, improving reading comprehension, or grasping difficult concepts, I’m here to help!
My Tutoring Style
I’m a firm believer in the Socratic approach to learning. Rather than simply providing answers, I try guide students through thought-provoking questions to help them discover the answers for themselves. This approach encourages critical thinking and fosters a deeper understanding of the subject matter.
At times, students may struggle with certain concepts, and in those instances I aim to provide the additional information and context needed to help them better understand the material. My teaching style is focused on building a strong foundation of knowledge and skills while encouraging creativity and independent thinking. I want learning to be an enjoyable and engaging experience, and I work hard to maintain positivity and support for my students.
I offer personalized, one-on-one tutoring sessions tailored to each student’s unique needs and learning style. Together, we’ll work to build your student’s confidence and achieve their goals. I can’t wait to hear from you!
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do you tutor?
I can tutor in-person by appointment with students in your home, or can even tutor online via video conferencing. While I prefer the in-person connection, I’m happy to do whatever is more comfortable or convenient for the student. I tutor in the Haldimand-Norfolk and Hamilton areas, but can travel as far as Burlington.
How does assignment review work?
Parents or their student can let me know when assignments are due and we can arrange a day and time for me to review their work. I’m fairly prompt in getting work back to students, but I say a 24hour window just to ensure there is a realistic timeline in case I’m having a particularly busy week!
What are your rates?
I charge $40/hour for in-home tutoring, provided it is in Hamilton or the surrounding area. For assignment review, I charge $35/hour, and track the time spent. I can usually review a typical high-school essay in under an hour while providing thorough actionable feedback to the student.
What subjects do you tutor?
I’m very comfortable tutoring anything that is humanities-related, but I’ve also taken a number of university-level science courses including biology, Earth sciences, and astronomy, so I can help with most subjects. I really don’t like senior level (grade 11/12) math… it’s just not my jam, but I’m very comfortable with English, History, Law, Religion, and even Computer courses.
What grades do you work with?
I have primarily tutored high school students in-person, but I’ve also worked for Paper, an online tutoring company, where I had live classroom sessions with students as young as third grade. I’ve also done essay reviews for university students, helping them to polish their work before submitting it!
